Sweating is a normal process which allows your body to get rid of toxins and prevent overheating. It can happen on account of some hormonal fluctuations or due to stress and anxiety, we’ve all been there!
Sweating is actually a complex process ad two functions are involved. The eccrine glands release sweat, while the apocrine glands produce bacteria that help break down the fatty acids and proteins in the liquid. When the balance between good and bad bacteria on your skin gets disrupted, the bad bacteria take over and cause body odor. The smell is strongest when your skin is wet and that’s why people who sweat more are known to smell more, it’s as simple as that!
Sweat also contains pheromones, which play a role in social interactions, and antimicrobial proteins, which help prevent bacterial invasion as you come in contact with thousands of microorganisms throughout the day. As much as human biology teaches us that sweating is a normal and essential bodily function social standards have taught us differently. We think of it as something unhygienic and even embarrassing if it happens a lot.
In an effort to control sweating and eliminate bad body odor people often use all kinds of antiperspirants and deodorants which mess with the body’s natural sweating process and have even been linked to the onset of Alzheimer and breast cancer. But is there an alternative, because walking around with a puddle of sweat under your armpit is not an option we’re willing to consider!
Luckily for you, there is a natural alternative to the antiperspirant stick we swear by and we’re here to share it with you.
Simple Citrus Trick
If you want your armpits to smell fresh just slice a fresh lime in half and wipe each piece on your clean, dry armpits. You might notice a slight redness on the spot at the beginning but don’t worry, your skin will get used to it. If your skin is extra sensitive you can extract the juice and mix it with a little coconut oil before applying it to avoid irritating your skin. IT’s also not advisable to use this trick right after shaving, it may irritate your skin. The lime has natural antibacterial properties which will kill odor-causing bacteria without harming healthy bacteria. It’s also very beneficial hen ingested because it has the ability to fight off odor-causing fungi like candida so in addition to rubbing it on your skin you can also add a lime wedge to your water and fight the infections from the inside.
