Medical condition known as xanthelasmata or xanthelasma palpebrarum (yellow markings) is thought to be linked with a heart disease which is suggested in a survey published in the British Medical Journal in 2011. These upraised yellow spots appear on the upper or lower eyelid close to the internal part of the eye.
The Link between Xanthelasma and Heart Disease
Both men and women can suffer from this condition especially after the age of 40.These yellow markings are cholesterol deposits and indicate higher cholesterol level in almost half of the patients suffering from this condition. These patterns which are soft and painless don’t affect the eyesight and that is why people don’t notice them. Aesthetic purpose is the main reason why people opt to remove them without even thinking about the significant warning sign, although they appear again after removal.
Xanthelasma
The Scientific Evidence
A research made in Denmark (the Copenhagen City Heart Study) studied the connection between heart disease and xanthelasmata in the overall population. Professor Tybjaerg-Hansen who led the team made some findings that will change the way that these apparently harmless patterns are seen by ordinary people and doctors as well.
At the highest risk were men 70-79 old and the danger of heart attack was increased by 12% in men suffering from xanthelasma.
In women with xanthelasmata the possibility to have a heart attack is increased by 8% unlike those who don’t have these yellow markings.
As it is proven that women have a lower risk of heart diseases, the writers of this study explain that that is the reason why xanthelasmata has a greater prediction value in this group.
The survey concluded that xanthelasmata can forecast heart attack, severe atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease and death apart from other factors as high cholesterol levels, obesity, smoking and high blood pressure.
The presence of xanthelasma in every age group increased the possibility of heart disease, heart attack and death. Both male and female that had these yellow marks on their eyelids will probably have a heart attack or even die in 10 year period.
Men Are More Prone To Develop Heart Disease
It is proven that men are naturally more likely to suffer from heart disease.
What Should You Do
If yellow spots appear on your eyelids, it is recommendable to check your cholesterol level.
