Mostly teenagers and some adults have problems with acne. They appear when oil secretions from the skin’s sebaceous glands plug the hair follicles. Then usually skin bacteria go into these plugged follicles and nodules, pustules, cysts and papules are formed.
A lot of things in our everyday life can cause acne breakout. Some of them are: hormones, steroids found in some medicines, genetics, certain cosmetic substances, allergens in the environment and dirt. Even the food we consume can cause their appearance.
Some of these foods we consume are:
Milk and dairy products
These products are healthy as they are rich in calcium which is important for having strong bones. But there is scientific evidence that milk and dairies can cause acne breakouts. Experts claim that dairy increase the secretion of male sex hormones- androgens and insulin levels. They both trigger the oil gland to produce more oil which results in pimple breakout.
Sugary and carbohydrate-rich drinks and foods
The skin’s worst enemies are also ice cream, cake, chocolate and soda. These foods as well as carbohydrate-rich pasta and bread have high glycemic indexes-which means that they quickly convert to sugar. And we all know how harmful the sugar is: It increases insulin levels that cause cellular inflammation throughout the whole body. Inflammations further produce enzymes which destroy the elastin and collagen which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. Besides the fact that they accelerate the aging process, they also worsen the problem with acne, rosacea and many other skin conditions.
Alcoholic drinks
Dr. David Colbert, founder of the New York Dermatology Group claims that alcohol is hepatotoxin which harms our body. It affects the skin and is rich in colgeners which cause hangover and make you look worse in the morning. Besides the fact it causes dehydration it can affect your skin appearance. Alcohol drinks, especially those mixes full with sugar, salt and other harmful ingredients can lead to inflammation, which can cause acne.
That is why if you have tried everything and acne still appear than maybe it is time to change your diet. You could be feeding your acne unknowingly.
