Kohlrabi is actually a German name for cabbage turnip. It belongs to cruciferous vegetable family together with kale, cauliflower, broccoli, collard greens, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. It also belongs to the brassica family.

So is it tasty? Its taste is similar to broccoli stem, but milder and sweeter. It can be described as something between radish, cabbage and jicama.

You can consume the whole plant except its slender root. When you buy them in the store, they are half bulb and half greens. The edible stem or bulb is usually white, purple or green. It is rich in phytochemicals, which prevent cell damages and improve the overall body health.

Kohlrabi is rich in manganese, iron and calcium. They are all very important for preserving bone strength as you get older. Osteoporosis can be prevented when you are young so you must maintain calcium levels high.

It is also used in the fight against cancer. Components of cruciferous vegetables are proven to act against the growth of cancer cells, like breast tumors, as well as endometrium, liver, lung, cervix and colon cancer.

Kohlrabi is extremely beneficial if you are trying to lose extra pounds as it is rich in fiber and other important nutrients. It can keep you full for a longer period of time so you will avoid the snacks between meals or overeat.

Consuming Kohlrabi will protect you from heart diseases. A study conveyed on people from 25- 74 years  showed that consuming fruits and vegetables reduced the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It is also is extremely helpful in relieving indigestion. You can prepare juice from celery, kohlrabi, carrot and green apples which improve digestion.

Kohlrabi is also rich in vitamin C which is very important for maintaining proper blood pressure. Vitamin C deficiency can lead to atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer and gallbladder disease.

Kohlrabi contains B- vitamins which are important for enzymatic processes in the body. These processes are important for normal function of the entire body. So consume foods rich in B- vitamins and remember- kohlrabi is one of them.

Kohlrabi is rich in carotene including beta carotene which is an important antioxidant and is especially important for the ocular area.
