Discover what is the relationship between inactivity and death here

We give you all the figures on global deaths due to inactivity

“Cardiovascular disease is the first cause of death in the world and hypertension its main risk factorfollowed by smoking, hyperglycemia and sedentary lifestyle. According to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), a third of the world’s population suffers from it and more than nine million people will end up dying from its direct effects, which represents 13% of all deaths”, warns the Dr. Enrique Galve, president of the Vascular Risk and Cardiac Rehabilitation Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC).
In our countrythere are 11 million people (40%) who suffer from this disease, of which a third do not know they are sick and another third, although they are treated, are poorly controlled.

The practice of physical activity and the reduction of salt intake, main remedies against hypertension

The objective of the World Day of Physical Activity, celebrated recently, aims to that everyone performs at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, whether it is practicing a sport or changing our daily routine, like walking to work, using the stairs instead of the elevator,…
The WHO has also expressed concern after learning of the high rate of sedentary lifestyle that exists in the population, since it is already considered the fourth risk factor for non-communicable diseases and to which 6% of global deaths are attributed.
“Precisely, the practice of physical activity is one of the preventive measures to fight against hypertension and heart disease”, highlights Dr. Galve. There are various studies, such as the one published by the American Journal of Public Health and carried out by the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, which after analyzing the physical activity and blood pressure of almost 4,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 30, showed that Participants who exercised an average of five times a week and expended 300 calories per exercise session had a 17% lower risk of high blood pressure compared to those who were less active.
This study also showed that less physical activity was still beneficial, as it those who increased their physical activity since the start of the study decreased their risk by 11% for every 1,500 calories expended during weekly exercise.
“Another aspect that is also very relevant to control blood pressure figures is the reduced salt intake. The WHO recommends a maximum intake of 5 grams of salt per day.while in Spain we consume almost 10 grams on average”, warns Dr. Galve.
It is estimated that 2.3 million people die each year from complications related to salt and that in Spain up to 20,000 strokes and 30,000 heart problems could be avoided each year, according to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
“Little by little, countries are becoming aware of this problem and are incorporating campaigns to reduce salt consumption, such as the one that AESAN has been carrying out in our country since 2010. Even so, the main problem lies in the amount of salt already contained in packaged products, about 80% of the daily intake”, laments Dr. Galve.
“In any case, citizens can apply measures such as cook without salt, remove the salt shaker from the table or buy products that are low in salt. Reduce alcohol consumption, avoid tobacco and follow a healthy diet These are other measures that will help us prevent heart disease”, recommends the doctor.
