Black Pepper and Turmeric – This Combination Could Save Your Life

Researchers at the University of Michigan have concluded that the combination of turmeric and black pepper can be very important in preventing and treating breast cancer. Even though it is a well-known fact that turmeric is powerful and beneficial herb, when is consumed orally it has reduced absorption (bioavailability) because of its fast metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall. Black pepper therefore is used to increase the turmeric absorption which will help in the fight against cancer, infection, inflammation etc.

  1. Anti-Cancer Combination.

Studies, which were conveyed recently, have proven that the compound known as piperine that is found in black pepper makes the curcumin in turmeric up to 1000 times more bioavailable. Bioavailability of turmeric is really low without the help of piperine. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Journal published a study in which it is proven that the combination of curcumin and piperine is quite efficient against cancer stem cells.

  1. Reduces Pain and Inflammation.

Piperine and Curcumin are also proven to influence more than 700 genes. It is also proven that they prevent the activity and synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX),and some other enzymes which trigger inflammation.

  1. Weight-Loss:

Turmeric and black pepper can help with losing extra pounds as well. The piperine in black pepper is thermogenic which means that it accelerates the metabolism and helps in burning calories. It also reduces the appetite.

  1. Natural antidepressant.

These beneficial ingredients in black pepper and turmeric can act as antidepressants. They can increase the serotonin and dopamine level in the brain. On the other hand they reduce the monoamine oxidase, an enzyme which if found in high levels in the brain, can cause depression.

Turmeric and black pepper  can be added to most foods and in fresh vegetable juices or smoothies.
