Don’t Want to Visit Dentist? Try These Hacks to Whiten Your Teeth

September 24, 2019 by Valerie Kirwin

1. Be Choosy While Picking Tooth Brush

The importance of taking proper care of your mouth can never be overemphasized for several reasons. It is not only ideal to maintain good oral hygiene in order to enjoy dental health, but to ensure that you are protected against other issues that could lead to life threatening ailments. It has been discovered that gum disease as trivial as it may seem, could potentially result in the development of deadly illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. Toothbrush plays a major role in helping to maintain good oral hygiene but care must be taken when selecting a toothbrush. There are various kinds of toothbrushes available today, ranging from the manual disposal type to the electric variety but the trick is in picking one that would be most suitable for you. Irrespective of the type you decide to go for, two basic things you must look out for include its size and bristle variety.

  • Size: the ideal toothbrush head you should pick is the one that would allow you unfettered access to the nooks and crannies of your dentition.
  • Bristle Variety: toothbrushes come in soft, medium or hard variety. For most people, the soft variety is often comfortable and safe than the others. Also, ensure that the bristles have rounded tips.

2. Give a Shot to Oil Pulling

Oil Pulling is a unique way of maintaining oral hygiene without resorting to the conventional toothbrush. All you need to do is to fill your mouth with a spoonful of any suitable oil such as coconut oil, olive oil etc and floss it around for about 20 minutes and thereafter spit it out. Oil pulling can give your teeth a whiter shine, less plaque and fresh breath.

3. Use Baking Soda While Brushing

Studies have shown that baking soda can whiten your teeth significantly and equally helps to keep your mouth clean. This quality could be attributed to its abrasive nature. Although, the American Dental Association (ADA) does not yet approve baking soda as standalone toothpaste, rather it recommends that it should be used as ingredient in making toothpaste.

4. Flossing is One of the Most Important

Flossing is vital in when trying to maintain good oral hygiene. However, it is important to note that flossing is not a substitute to brushing, rather both of them works hand-in-hand. While brushing can be effective in removing plaque that tries to build up in the front as well as back surfaces of dentition, flossing on its own helps you to get rid of plaque that might attach itself in-between the crevices of your teeth and also those that may hide beneath your gum. Without proper flossing, these inaccessible spots are where destructive microbial activity takes place undisturbed.

5. Use Mouthwash

Just like flossing, mouth wash does not have to replace conventional brushing or even flossing, rather it is best suited to compliment them. It would provide additional benefits, especially in areas such as helping to prevent bad breath, gum disease, dry mouth, cavities or oral sores.

6. Avoid Smoking and Drinking

Smoking and drinking are two very popular habits that have no known gains; instead they are vastly notorious for putting those that indulge in them at serious risk of health hazards. Aside other deadly diseases that can be directly attributed to them such as damages to the lungs, liver and other vital organs, they can also put one at risk of gum disease and oral cancer. Similarly, cigarettes contain nicotine and tar and aside affecting your taste bud, it can also damage your teeth by staining it. Its negative attributes does not end there, as it can also lead to bad breath. Same applies to drinking, soda and coffee drinks can equally stain the teeth while alcohol leaves one with unpleasant breath.

 7. Try Tooth-whitening Kits

Almost everyone would desire to have sparklingly white teeth, especially for those who due to certain lifestyles had their teeth discolored or stained. There are various types of teeth whitening kits and they come in different forms, ranging from the organic DIY variant to the all-in-one LED kit or the strip type. Generally, there are two options one can follow in trying to whiten their teeth and they are categorized as:

  • In-office based (contain about 15% to 43% peroxide) or
  • At-home care dentition bleaching (3% to 20%)

However, since this article is all about home solution to dental care, we will sideline in-office based and focus on the latter. Common types of the home remedy ones include whitening strips and gels, tray-based bleaching systems, and whitening toothpastes. Regardless of the type you choose, it is crucial to remain consistent in maintaining good oral hygiene by flossing, brushing and also rinsing always. Likewise, to enjoy long lasting ‘NicerSmile you should avoid acidic foods and beverages including carbonated beverages, coffee, sports drinks, red wine, and sauces such as tomato, curries and soy.
