Lanzones – Small Exotic Fruit with Big Health Benefits

February 8, 2019 by Valerie Kirwin

This exotic fruit is known as lanzones, lansium, or langsat. Besides being delicious it is also very healthy. Lanzones grow in Asia as well as in Southern India. This fruit has yellow to light brown peel, oval shape of the fruit which grows in clusters. Although you can cook the fruit, local people prefer to consume it raw. There is also canned syrup of this fruit as well as candied version.

Lanzones – Exotic Fruit with Big Health Benefits

Lanzones are quite healthy and below you can find some of the health benefits they contain:

Fiber

You can consume the fruit but you must throw away the seeds. Lanzones can provide you with 2 grams of fiber for every hundred gram serving. These will cover 8% of the recommended daily intake for dietary fiber for women and 6% in men. We all need to consume food rich in fiber as it will protect your heart and it will also prevent constipation.

Riboflavin

Lanzones are also rich in riboflavin which is a vitamin from the B group of vitamins. Riboflavin is also known as B2. One hundred grams of lanzones contain 124 micrograms of B2, which is 8 % of the daily recommended intake for riboflavin for man and women as well.

B vitamins together with riboflavin help in processing carbohydrates. They turn into energy which body uses to keep the nervous system healthy.  This vitamin is water-soluble which means that you need to take it every day because your body cannot store it. Consuming lanzones will provide your body with the necessary amount of riboflavin.

Antioxidants

Lanzones are rich in antioxidants and vitamin A. This vitamin is extremely beneficial. It will protect your eyes against macular degeneration and other vision problems. This fruit also contains polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants found in plants. They can prevent some health problems as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and hypertension.  The antioxidants in this fruit  help in cleaning your body from free radicals which accelerate the aging process and cause serious diseases.

Fresh lanzones are the healthiest option if you want to fully use their health benefits. You can use their peel for driving mosquitos away.
