Cavities happen when a specific type of acid-producing bacteria starts destroying the tooth enamel and the underlying layer. This bacteria starts eating away your tooth and once this process starts there’s no going back, you have to go to the dentist and get a filling. Or can it be reversed?
Contrary to popular belief, cavities can be reversed naturally and there are a few ways in which you can do it. The British Medical Journal published a study which revealed that cavities and tooth decay can be reversed naturally through diet. The study was done on 62 subjects (children with cavities) which were divided into 3 groups. The first group was instructed to eat a standard diet with an addition of oatmeal (rich in phytic acid) for breakfast. The second group ate a normal diet with the addition of vitamin D supplements while the third group ate a grain-free diet and vitamin D supplements.
The results revealed that Group 1, who had a diet high in grains and phytic acid, had an increase in cavities. Group 2 showed improvements in cavities, while Group 3, who followed a grain-free diet with nutrient-rich foods and a Vitamin D supplement, saw the greatest improvements. The subjects from the third group had almost all their cavities healed.
This study has been verified by a number of doctors and dentists, who also claim that a change in the diet can help you reverse cavities and tooth decay. All our lives we’ve been told that regular brushing is needed in order to prevent cavities and that they occur due to sugary and starchy residues on our teeth. In reality, it’s not as simple as that, there are much more factors which influence the appearance of cavities and tooth decay. According to Dr. Edward Mellanby, Dr. Weston Price and Dr. Ramiel Nagel, there are four main things that contribute to tooth decay:
- Lack of minerals in the diet (magnesium, calcium and phosphorus deficiencies)
- Lack of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K)
- Too much consumption of food rich in phytic acid
- Too much consumption of processed sugar
Natural Ways to Reverse Cavities
- Eliminate sugars from your diet
If you want to avoid a trip to the dentist and have healthy, cavity-free teeth you need to eliminate all sugars from your diet. Sugar feeds the oral bacteria that prevents a healthy flow of dental fluids and is highly acidic as well. These two factors decalcify and demineralize the structural content of teeth and cause tooth decay.
- Consume Nutrient-Rich Foods
If you want to prevent and reverse cavities you need to increase the intake of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals through food. Eat more leafy green vegetables and healthy fats, like coconut and avocado. You should also start eating more nuts and seeds. These foods are the perfect combination if you want a cavity free teeth.
- Try oil pulling
Oil pulling has been used for centuries as an oral detoxification procedure. Simply swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, then spit the oil into the trash. At the beginning you can start with 2-3 minutes and work your way up to 20 minutes. Aside from taking care of your teeth, oil pulling is known to help with a number of conditions, from headaches to gingivitis.
- Eliminate Phytic Acid
Phytic acid is commonly found in grains, nuts, seeds and beans which are not organic or GMO free and it’s known to block mineral absorption and inhibit enzyme production. Eating food rich in phytic acid can lead to a number of health issues, from mineral deficiencies to osteoporosis. If you want to be sure that your food is phytic acid free you should always choose organic and GMO free foods.
- Use Mineralizing Toothpaste
It’s also recommended to use fluoride free toothpaste, but we all know that these are pretty expensive so if you can’t afford one you can try the following recipe. You can make your own mineralizing toothpaste with the following ingredients:
- 3 tbsp. of food grade diatomaceous earth clay
- 1/4 tsp. of baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. mint-flavored chlorophyll
- 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract
- 1/2 tsp. of coconut oil
- 1 tbsp. filtered water
