Six Tips For Removing Earwax at Home

February 8, 2019 by Valerie Kirwin

Earwax or cerumen is yellowish substance which is secreted in our ears and it acts as a natural lubricant.

The earwax should prevent any damage of the ear which can be caused by bacterial infection or  other harmful particles.

But if it is deposited in larger amount it can be irritating and annoying and can cause dizziness, hearing loss, itching etc.

Six Tips For Removing Earwax at Home

These symptoms occur due to obstruction in the ear canal. Although the ear wax is cleaned naturally, sometimes we need to clean the ears by ourselves because of the excess amount of earwax.

You should be aware that cotton swabs for cleaning the ear canal are not effective at all. They push the earwax deeper in the ear canal. There it accumulates, which causes more serious obstruction.

Also, the frequent use of earplugs and earbuds may also increase the risk of excessive earwax accumulation.

You can have the following symptoms if you suffer from excess earwax deposits:

  • Earaches
  • Hearing loss
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling of clogged ear canal
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Itching
  • Ear discharge

So, to prevent earwax build up you must clean your ears often. But do not use cotton swabs.

Thus you should try some natural remedies for cleaning your ears:

Hydrogen peroxide

Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide and water in equal amounts and put several drops of this mixture in the ear. Shake your head so the mixture could enter deeper in the ear canal. After several minutes tilt your head on the opposite side so the ear wax could come out.

Olive oil

Olive oil is able to soften the earwax which makes it easier to come out. Just put 2 or 3 drops of the olive oil in the ear before going to sleep. You need to sleep on the opposite side. Apply this treatment 3 or 4 nights in a row.

Paraffin oil

This oil is quite effective and is one of the safest ways to remove the earwax. It can be found in pharmacies. Just heat 2 or 3 tablespoons of paraffin oil over a candle light and apply into your ear canal. Then lie down for a few minutes and rinse it well with warm water. To get rid of earwax completely, repeat this treatment 3 days in a row.

Saline solution

Soak a cotton ball in a mixture prepared with one teaspoon of salt (7.5 g) previously dissolved in ½ cup of water (100 ml). Then tilt the head on side and put several drops in the ear. Wait for a few minutes until they enter in the ear canal and soften the earwax. After several minutes, tilt the head on the opposite side so the excess liquid could drain out. You will need a tissue.

Vinegar and alcohol solution

Take a small bowel and mix equal parts of vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Soak a cotton ball and put several drops of the mixture into each ear.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a common product which can be found easily in almost all pharmacies. It is quite effective in softening and removing earwax. At first, glycerin will soften the earwax so it will be easily removed. For better results, put four drops in each ear, three times a day.
