The health benefits of coffee are widely known. Abundant in antioxidants, this beverage can actually prevent the onset of serious diseases including colon cancer. These antioxidants are in fact part of chlorine genic acid, which is also found in common fruits. According to many health experts, the antioxidants in coffee can actually have negative impact on our bodies, particularly when coffee is consumed on an empty stomach.
In other words, only a cup of black coffee before breakfast stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid in your digestive tract. This is especially felt by people suffering from gastritis. Although you may have an otherwise healthy stomach, you can also have a reaction because hydrochloric acid breaks down food in your stomach. This digestive disruption is particularly evident after heavy meals as proteins become really hard to decompose.
Those proteins eventually lead to a number of health issues, including bloating, intestinal irritation or inflammation, and worst of all, even colon cancer.
The majority of health experts agree that coffee should only be consumed at least one full hour after waking up and after eating at least a piece of toast. Coffee should never be consumed immediately upon waking up because by doing so, you drastically increase your cortisol levels, and it takes time for the levels to become stable again.
It is cortisol in the body that supports wakefulness and controls our biological clock. Thus, a cup of coffee on an empty stomach can trigger several issues including acid reflux, bloating, and even vomiting. In case you are prevented from having breakfast after waking up, and you find it impossible to start your day without a morning coffee, it’s best to at least put a bit of milk or butter to ease the effects.
