Respiratory diseases are linked to the problem with returning of stomach acid into the esophagus. Gastric reflux can sometimes be caused by shortness of breath. Because it is a medical condition that occurs due to an inadequate lifestyle, besides antibiotic therapy, it can be controlled by changes in diet and behavior.

Huffington post represents these eight proven solutions against acid reflux.

  1. Sleep on your side

Studies show that sleeping on the stomach can worsen acid reflux. Some scientists warn that sleeping on the left side is more effective than sleeping on the right side in controlling of this condition.

  1. Eat smaller portions

Great meals that overload the esophagus and stomach can increase the problem of acid reflux. Try to reduce the size of the meals, without reducing the number of calories that you enter during the day.

  1. Use gum

Chewing sugarless gum can alleviate acid reflux by increasing the production of saliva, which, with its alkaline properties, helps in neutralizing the acid. 1. Consume spicy food

Several species, including licorice root and elm help in creating a layer along the esophagus that protects it from the acid.

5 Wear comfortable cloths

Tight clothing and belts may cause acid reflux. Experts recommend wearing comfortable and relaxed clothing in order to reduce pressure on the abdomen.

  1. Correct posture

Something as simple as correct posture and not going to sleep after a meal can help the food and acids to remain in the stomach instead of going into the esophagus.

  1. Stop smoking

If you have problems with gastric reflux you need to quit smoking. Nicotine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and helps the stomach acid to return in the esophagus. Cigarettes also stimulate the production of acid in the stomach; therefore larger amount of acid passes through the sphincter.

  1. Lose weight

Overweight and obesity are risk factors for stomach acid. If the person is obese, there is a greater chance that he/she will suffer from acid reflux.
